As the centennial celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment approaches, we were inspired to create a music-theater work in conversation with this milestone event in American history. In 2020, we received a grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council to assist in developing this work, which will culminate in performances in New York City.
A Women’s Suffrage Splendiferous Extravaganza!
This show is an original music-theater work, inspired by turn-of-the-century vaudeville, in which our daring Maestra Impresaria guides us through the comedic, tragic, and untold stories of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. Through unique adaptations of suffrage propaganda, including plays and popular songs, as well as newly commissioned songs from NYC-based composer Lacy Rose, Maestra Impresaria and her troupe lead us on an exhilarating jaunt, as we celebrate, explore, and problematize this historic fight to win the vote. By examining the intersection of the voices of historic women and American women of today, we ask the audience to consider how far we have come in building an equal and just society for all women.
