While film and video content comprise half of our artistic output, The Pleiades Project also actively creates and programs live music-theater events.
In the 2017-2018 season, we premiered Café 1907 with performances at The MultiCultural Sonic Evolution Festival (NYC) and on The Plush Nocturne Performance Series (NYC). Set in a small café at the turn-of-the-century, Café 1907 presents intimate portraits of women at various stages of their lives, offering nuanced perspectives on life, love, and making art. NYC-based composer Richard Pearson Thomas's song cycle, Portraits of Imagined Love, is the centerpiece for this music-theater event, balanced by the works of female composers from the period, including Amy Beach, Agathe Bäcker Grøndahl, Alma Mahler, Pauline Viardot, and Ethel Smyth. In the 2018-2019 season, The Pleiades Project premiered Come, Down Angels with performances at The Multicultural Sonic Evolution Festival (NYC) and through Inception to Exhibition at the Alchemical Theatre Laboratory (NYC). Come Down, Angels explores North and South American folk songs and spirituals from female perspectives, including works composed and arranged by Florence Price, Gladys Rich, Undine Smith Moore, and Violeta Parra. |
